Do Guppies Sleep?

Yes, guppies do sleep. However, unlike humans or other mammals, guppies don’t have eyelids, so they can’t close their eyes when they sleep.

Instead, guppies enter into a state of rest where they reduce their activity levels and conserve energy.

Guppies, just like any other animal, require rest to maintain their health and well-being.

While guppy fish don’t sleep in the same way that humans do, they still need periods of rest to recuperate from the activities of the day.

As such, it’s important to understand the signs of a sleeping guppy to ensure that they’re getting the rest they need.

Here are some signs and indicators to better understand how guppies sleep:

Motionless or Inactivity

One of the most obvious signs of a sleeping fish is reduced activity. While some fish may still move around during sleep, they’ll generally be less active than they are during waking hours.

You might notice that your guppy is resting in a particular area of the tank for extended periods and is motionless.

Gills Moving Slowly:

Fish breathe through their gills and when you see slow-moving gills it indicates a state of rest.

You may also notice changes in breathing patterns in a sleeping guppy. While sleeping, fish will often slow down their breathing and may even appear to be taking shallow breaths.

This is perfectly normal and is simply an indication that the fish is in a restful state.

Reduced Sensitivity to Stimuli

Another sign of a sleeping guppy is reduced sensitivity to stimuli. During sleep, fish will generally be less reactive to external stimuli like light or movement.

You may notice that your fish is less likely to startle or react to sudden movements or sounds while sleeping.

Staying Still Near the Bottom or Floating Near the Surface of the Water

You might notice your guppies occasionally settling down near the bottom of the tank, finding a cozy spot to take a rest.

They may stay there for a while, perfectly still, as if they’ve found their own little slumber corner.

On the other hand, some guppies might choose to doze off near the surface of the water. It’s like they’ve found their own personal waterbed!

They might even choose to sleep inside of a decoration, leaf of an aquarium plant and even on the immersed filter if it is quiet.

How Do We Know That Guppies Are Asleep?

Guppies remain motionless, their gills move slowly, also they are less sensitive to stimuli, and may rest near the bottom (substrate) or might hover near the top (surface) of the tank, when they sleep at night.

Where Do Guppies Sleep?

In the wild, guppies typically sleep near the bottom of the water column, hiding in plants or other structures to avoid predators.

In an aquarium, guppies may sleep in similar locations, but they may also sleep near the top of the water surface or at the bottom of the tank, on the substrate.

Guppies can sleep for up to 8 hours at night, but this can vary depending on individual factors and their environment.

It’s important to provide your fish with a stress-free environment and observe their sleeping patterns to ensure they are getting the rest they need for optimal health and well-being.

If your guppies are not getting enough sleep it will stress them out and they may be susceptible to diseases and may even die.

Ensure at least 8 hours of sleeping time for your guppies by turning off the lights completely in the room and of the aquarium where your guppies are housed.

Do Guppies Sleep at Night or During the Day?

Guppies are diurnal fish and they are active during the day and sleep or rest during the night. They sleep at the night time when the lights are completely off.

Guppies are known to be more active during the day and less active at night, so they sleep during the nighttime hours.

Do Guppies Sleep at the Bottom or Top of the Tank?

Guppies may sleep at the bottom or top of the tank, depending on their preference and the tank conditions.

In general, guppies prefer to sleep near the bottom of the tank where they feel safer and more secure. However, if the water in the tank is well-oxygenated, guppies may also sleep near the surface.

Factors Affecting Guppy SleepTiny character with a pencil and checklist of factors

Several factors can affect the quality and duration of guppy’s sleep. Some of the factors are discussed in this section.

Take a note of these important factors to ensure that your guppies might sleep well.

Lighting

Guppies are sensitive to light when it comes to sleep, and a lack of darkness in the tank can disrupt their sleeping patterns.

Make sure to provide your guppies with a dark environment during the night-time hours.

Water quality

Poor water quality can cause stress and illness in guppies, which can disrupt their sleeping patterns. Make sure to maintain optimal water parameters in the tank and perform regular water changes.

Tank Size

Guppies need plenty of space to swim and move around, and a tank that is too small can cause stress and anxiety.

A cramped environment can also disrupt their sleeping patterns. As a general rule, allow at least one gallon of water per inch of fish.

You can read some of my articles for the correct stocking practices and tank mates for a nano 5 gallon guppy tank or a 10 gallon-tank for more information.

Additionally, you can read my article on how many guppies in 20 gallon tank, if you are planning to get one or already have one to give you a basic idea about the best stocking practices in a 20-gallon guppy tank.

Tank mates

Aggressive tank mates can cause stress and disrupt the sleep of guppies. Make sure to choose tank mates that are compatible with guppies and won’t bully or harass them.

Avoid stocking them with larger carnivorous fish and aggressive fish like betta fish. Also, avoid fin nippers that can bite the fins of your guppies.
