Asagi Koi Fish (How To Pick A Good Asagi)

An Asagi Koi fish mainly consists of three colors, a blue back on top, red belly below the lateral line and white areas on its body. It is said that the ancestry of this koi variety dates back more than one hundred and sixty (160) years. Asagi are like any other koi fish and what sets them apart is their unique color. They are recognized predominantly by the bluish, reticulated or dotted net pattern over the back, with reddish areas on the fins and on the sides of the head.

Asagi koi may or may not have red color markings on its cheeks. The forehead and nose areas of this variety is usually white or it is pale and may have reddish cheeks which to some looks kinda cute. Asagi koi have different scaling, for example some Asagi with “Doitsu” scaling are called Shusui, and other have a colorful red (“hi”) form in which blue coloration is overlaid with red.


How To Pick A Good Asagi Koi

Have you wondered about selecting a baby Asagi for you koi pond? Then you want the dark colour scales on top of the fish to be as light as possible.

If you select an Asagi baby koi with darker scales then when it grows up after two years, or so, the dark black coloration will have a very high chance of covering the entire body of the koi fish.

Select an Asagi having a very light grey or black coloration when it is a baby, then, you will get the blue colour scales on top of the Asagi visible at two years old or somewhat closer to that age.

Dotted pattern on top of the Asagi’s body is preferred among koi hobbyists and breeders and looks really cool. Dark spots on the already blue or dark dotted pattern on top of the Asagi is not preferred and you should look for it before getting one for yourself.

The bottom of an Asigi Koi fish should be orange and will gradually develop over time. The orange can be visible on the cheeks,gills pectoral fins,lateral line and also other parts and fins of the Asagi koi fish. When you select an Asagi you do not want the red or orange above the lateral line.

The forehead of an Asagi should be of white or very light bluish in color. You want your Asagi’s forehead as light colored as possible and free from red or orange markings on its forehead.
